The THRE Research Institute is mainly engaged in the R&D and design of wheels, axles, gearboxes and wheelset integrated products for rail transport in their life cycle. Based on professional design software, product processing and performance requirements are oriented. The institute has the ability of product design, material research, and process development, etc. according to AAR, EN, UIC and other standards. Professional testing instruments are applied to test the service products, and evaluate product service performance, ensuring the quality in product life cycle.The wheel and axle for Chinese standardized EMU with speed of 350km/h have obtained China's CRCC certification and starts to operate. The self-developed wheel and axle has independent intellectual property rights. The manufacturer is the only company in China that can produce wheel and axle, whichhas won many awards such as the National Excellent Quality Management Team for Machinery Industry, the New Bridge Award of China Technology Market, and the Shanxi Science and Technology Progress Award. It has obtained more than 30 patents for authorization, including 6 invention patents; it has taken the lead and participated in the formulation of more than 20 technical standards.
The research institute has relevant engineering and technical researchers in the fields of engineering mechanics, metal material, material forming, machinery manufacturing, and quality testing. Among them, senior titles take proportion of 16.2%, intermediate titles take up 58.8%, and graduate students account for 45.6%. Relying on this research institute, some research institutes are established, such as Shanxi Provincial Academician Workstation, Shanxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Rail Transit Wheel and Axle System, Key Parts Engineering Laboratory of Mechanical Industry Rail Transit. And the research institute has maintained long-term close cooperation with Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Iron and Steel, and Iron and Steel Research Institute, andjoint innovation teams have been established with Southwest Jiaotong University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Taiyuan University of Science and Technology, and Taiyuan Iron and Steel Group.
